ReUse for Earthday: Workshop of Ori-Hanger Art and Functional Items, zenbend.com, 2008

'Throughout the design and fabrication process keep the twist intact and always use the whole hanger '- By maintaining 'hanger integrity, The rules of 'hanger art.' Class will experience hands-on examples of hanger art and functional items Both Tranforming and Tranformable -

Participants experience Fun and Safe Techniques, adhererance to the basic Hanger Art rules, an inherent hanger proportion related to living things, and participant creativity and imagination: Fun, beautiful, and often practical results pave the way for future efforts on the part of the participants - 'ReUseability eases re-Creation!

Rivalling Origami to aid our environmental health: Class methods promote a realistic hands-on reality to

1) Save all hangers for 'Re-Re-ReUse ... Earthday and Beyond...'

2) Promote hands-on creativity and healthy, grounded communications (under-utilized resources!).

3) Discover through experience new and often invisible hence under-utilized urban resources...wire hangers primarily- and others!

Introductory Workshop (audience taylored, 40 minutes to one hour, age 6 to adult) includes:

1) 5-10 minutes: instruction in '(h)anger-management:' handling, organizing, and safety; Why ReUse,

2) 25-45 minutes: 'hands-on' how to - imaginative revelations encouraged..."this looks like a...!") Make:

a. Single-hanger butterflies (sometimes, rabbits) (enthusiastic success with ages 6 through adult)

b. Display/stand, discuss 'balance' through mobiles ... Zen Bend and A. Calder 'Circus,' calming,

c. (or show): modular five-hanger star, other (hangers UNMODIFIED), then take apart, remake...

3) 5-10 minutes: other Zen Bend materials introduced; Class display of work demonstrated, easing seamless integration. Q&A. or show examples interlocked into basic geometric volumes - these modified for components for large-scale sculpture (ie elephant!). or other ies, ie 5-hanger hawk, or 31-hanger eagle...

Notes: - Q&A and Class discussion can be dovetailed from other classes and disciplines as/if needed.

- All materials can be provided and included, although participant-obtained Re-Use hangers strongly encouraged!

1. modular, choose from 'bouncy thing,' five or six hanger star, or other star
2. singles (sculpting): 'symetry,' choose from butterfly, rabbit, other TBA
3. 'balance,' intro for continuation at home and/or next class, and/or
show and review/discuss next class/Links

Class two : one hour (variable)
show and tell to suit needs, review class one

1. Hi-cube, and/or other from class one
2. Hi-cobe castle' or sculpting other from class one
3. motion, mobiles

Class three : one hour (variable)

1. trivet or candlestick holder, other from classes one and two
2. dolphin (use of pliers required), other from classes one and two
3. independent work, or group project ie 'snowman' (sphere60' starter), or 'New Years Dragon' (bouncy thing module).,

Advanced, Further or alternate class : Transformers, hanger modules which make different things depending on how you connect them
3. repeat-ability, in art making as in living: idols, language, and practice. Write instructions about something you make, so someone else can make a copy which is 'identical.'
